Day 1 - Arrival in Heraklion and welcome dinner
Settled since Neolithic times, with the highest mountain of the island Psiloritis rising behind, Heraklion is Crete’s modern capital.
Today we will meet at our hotel for an introductory talk with a walking tour to follow that will reveal the cities riches. Our dinner features delicious local produce and traditional Cretan dishes.
Based on simple techniques, it’s the variety of local produce that distinguishes the dishes: mountain herbs and greens, bulbs, unique cheeses, fresh fish, and the famous Cretan oil.

Lets' open a fascinating window into the ancient world by visiting Knossos Palace, which was by far the largest of the Minoan Palaces, thriving more than three and a half thousand years ago at the heart of a highly sophisticated island-wide civilization.
Then prepare yourself for a journey to the unique underwater world of the Mediterranean by visiting the Aquarium and joining an experiential and playful tour especially tailored for a group of small children. Armed with a lot of imagination and enhanced feeling of exploring, children explore and enjoy learning about the marine environment and the animals that live in it.
After lunch we will drive towards the city of Rethymnon, for an afternoon stroll and to settle into our hotel.

Ancient Eleftherna, a Dorian built settlement, lies in the foothills of Psiloritis, the highest mountain of Crete  and the Archeological Institute of America included it, in its top discoveries of 2009. We start our hike from the ancient Acropolis of the town, and on our way we will pass the remarkable Roman cisterns, which are carved into the hill’s west side, the Necropolis and a 3rd century BC ancient bridge.
Our hike finishes in the tiny village of Margarites, known for its pottery and we will visit a workshop in which your children will make their own ceramic pieces.
In the afternoon we will play a treasure hunt in the labyrinthine lanes of the historic quarter of Rethymnon which still preserves much of the appearance of the Venetian and Turkish era.

We will play “Farmer for the Day” and we will learn how it feels to make and eat home-made Cretan food. While adults enjoy the farm experience, our new junior farmers join in fun-filled farm activities including making dough and baking, picking vegetables and preparing dishes for their own healthy and delicious lunch. At the end we will all relax under the pergola with views over the olive groves and down to the sea, all while enjoying a farmhouse lunch from the fruits of our labor.

The pine tree-lined Imbros gorge narrows and widens dramatically in places until it reaches the south coast and the Libyan Sea. This is a wonderfully quiet walk and the gorge is as interesting as its better-known rival Samaria, albeit on a smaller scale. Narrow and stiflingly confined in places, speckled with caves in others and at one point passing under a monumental natural stone archway. The three hour walk is ideal for the kids especially since right afterwards we will hop in our bus for a short ride to the beach of Frangokastello, among the best spots in Crete. This beach boasts fine sand and crystal clear shallow water making it ideal for children.

In the morning we will drive towards the modern village of Mili, from where we will do an easy two-hour hike towards Rethymnon. The name of this wonderfully-cool, shady gorge and the virtually-deserted village beside the stream, is derived from the many watermills in the area. These mills were active from the Venetian time until the 1970’s. We will encounter many small waterfalls and ruined mills in the hillside, once fed by the stone aqueducts that drop from mill to mill.
During the afternoon we will get to know Rethymon town better,in a fun way, by playing a scavenger hunt!

Day 8 - Chania visit
Chania is the spiritual capital of Crete. With its shimmering waterfront, crumbling masonry and web of alleys, it’s an extraordinary attractive city. It has plenty to fill a good day’s worth of sightseeing but the greatest pleasure of all is to be wandering the narrow streets and stepped alleyways of the old quarters which are filled with Venetian and Turkish architectural gems. Chania after all is one of the longest continuously inhabited city sites in the world.
Today we will do a walking tour and we will enjoy our guide’s insight on the history of the area. The visit will conclude our final leg of our Odyssey and there will be some time for independent sightseeing before the farewell dinner in the city of Rethymnon.
