This is a hiking tour in two less known and undeveloped by mass tourism, in the Aegean. Both retain their traditional character of white-washed villages with narrow streets, wild countryside with spring and summer flowers. We first visit Kythnos, the island’s history is one of the oldest in the Cyclades going back 9000 years. The hikes show these historical roots, pass through churches and arrive to some of the numerous sandy beaches on the island. We then continue to Sifnos; inhabited areas with beautiful “blue and white” traditional villages, cultivated lands, where terraced slopes with olive groves prevail, and wild areas where the Mediterranean maquis and juniper forests are dominant. The best way to explore these islands is certainly on foot, taking advantage of the numerous trails. Easy to walk for the largest amount of them, they offer the opportunity to the hiker to deeply explore and enjoy the aforementioned landscapes, to get in touch with local culture and the famously friendly local society.

Day 1 – Arrive to Kythnos

Upon arrival to Kythnos you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel to Chora, the capital of the island.

Day 2 Hike  Chora - Panagía tou Níkous

This is a loop hike, one of the most beautiful of the island. Starting from Chora we will pass through churches and the historical monastery of Panaghia tou Nikous. Then in remote countryside with oleander bushes we hike admiring great view of the islands beaches. We end to the beach of Aghios Ioannis, a prehesotric port that was exporting copper in antiquity. After a refreshing swim we hike to the nearby beach of Agios Stefanos where we can also swim, rest before we ascend to Chora.

Duration of hike: approx. 3,5 – 4 hours – Distance:  10 Km’s.

Day 3 – Chora –Loutra – Kastro Orias and ferry to Sifnos

Today’s hike via mule paths takes us first to Loutra renowned for their hot springs. Loutra is a quite popular spot of the island with cafes etc. We then continue through another magnificent trail to Orias Castle via dramatic drops  down the valley to the sea. The byzantine castle, has been an active settlement since 3000 years before Christ, was destroyed by the Turks in 1570. The remains cover much of the headland after the arch way entry and are really impressive.

Duration of hike : approx. 3 hours– Distance:  7Km’s.

As usually the ferries that connect Kythnos to Sifnos are in the evening, we will embark the ferry to Sifnos, a pleasant 1,5 hour trip.

Day 4 – Hike Apollonia – Panagia Toso Nero – Apollonia

This is the longest and richest trail of Sifnos in terms of natural variety and cultural sites. The first part of the trail through small creeks, olive groves and terraced slopes, it approaches the church of Theologos Mongou, which was a nuns monastery. A leveled but stable uphill will lead you to a panoramic spot, at the church of Agios Lefteris. The natural path that moves around the hill offers breathtaking views and an absolute sense of freedom! The view opens towards the west, and it is endless. A steep descent reveals a totally new side of Sifnos, wilder, harsh, and also very inspiring. The descent ends in the remote church of Panagia Toso Nero with its colorful wooden retable. On the way down, you will pass through the hidden valley of Skafi, where it is strongly suggested that you visit the monastery of Taxiarchis. The last part of the trail passes through Apollonia, on the famous “steno”, the main narrow street of the village. It is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan streets in Sifnos, full of shops, cafes and taverns. This will be the end of the trail. Those who walked it, will certainly feel that walking this  trail  feels like discovering the most well kept secrets of Sifnos. It feels like you have conquered the island. In reality, the island will have conquered you!

Duration of hike: appx.7 hours – Distance: 15 Km’s

We return to our hotel for a relaxing night after our long but rewarding day.

Day 5: Artemonas – Agios Sostis Today we will enjoy a short hike to compensate for our previous long day. Starting with an interesting strolling between the large 19th c. mansions of Artemonas, the trail moves uphill till the village of Agia Anna. From there, we will walk on a “balcony trail”, enjoying endless views to the Aegean sea and the Cyclades. The place is called “Portes of Agios Sostis” (translated “the doors of Agios Sostis”). Here the vegetation changes. The slopes are harsher and drier. The trail, after a few hundred meters from the gate becomes large, with many steps, and is probably ancient. You will be walking on the footsteps of the ancient miners, that worked under hard conditions on the lead and silver mines, till you reach the end of the trail, at the church of Agios Sostis. The mines, according to some theories, where in use since the Early Bronze Age (2800 -2200 B.C.). They were also used during classical times and again in the 19th and 20th c.

Duration of hike: appx.2 hours – Distance: 5.9 Km’s.

After our lunch we will spend the rest of the day relaxing to one of the islands numerous beaches.

Day 6: Gialos – Fykiada – Platys Gialos

We have chosen this trail for your last day as a highlight as we literally evade from modern civilization. The trail will lead us to Profitis Ilias Kondou, a small chapel with the gathering rooms next to it. Get around the church and the unlimited view will reward you for the effort to climb up here! Leaving the church behind, the trail continues almost at the same altitude until it reaches the other side of the hill, offering panoramic views that constantly change as you walk to the west. The descent towards the remote bay of Fykiada is one of the best parts of the whole Sifnos Trails network. After reaching the beach, you will walk on an old and very peaceful olive grove till you suddenly reach the abandoned mansion of Moussia, with its well protected internal court. From Moussia, only a few hundred meters separate you from the colourful, volcanic rocks coastal walk. In the opposite side, you might observe the small chapel of Kitriani, on the homonym island. It is the oldest church of Sifnos! The coastal walk ends with a steep ascent, right before passing the hill that separates you from Platys Gyalos. Refresh with a swim to Platys Gialos before we return to our hotel.

Duration of hike: appx.4 hours – Distance: 11.4 Km’s.
