The Zagori is one of the most picturesque regions of Greece with authentic, stone villages and magnificent views of the Pindos Mountains. Vikos gorge is renowned for its natural beauty and crystal river pools. In the well preserved villages of the Zagori, you will find traditional guesthouses, with hospitable owners and savor traditional meals made with local ingredients. This is a soft adventure cultural tour through which you will get the chance to experience the regions highlights. A variety of cultural activities and action will provide a magical holiday.

Day 1: Arrival in Zagori

The tour starts from the town of Ioannina where you can either fly via a domestic flight from Athens or drive from the areas closest airports (Corfu, Preveza, and Thessaloniki) or another destination. If you need assistance on that please do not hesitate to contact us. Depending on your arrival point and time your guide will greet you and transfer to Zagori and the beautiful village of Elati.  Dinner at the square of the village.

Day 2: Wool fabric felt seminar & hike from Elati to Kipi

After our homemade breakfast we will visit the local workshop of Giota, who will present to us the ancient technique of felt, using only your hands, water and sheep’s wool, we will build a unique handmade cloth.

 After the seminar we will enjoy a 3 hour hike (approximate hiking time 3.30 hours) to the village of Kipi. The hike starts in front of our guesthouse. For about half an hour we walk on asphalt until we enter a forested hiking path on a ridge with wonderful views to the mountain Timfi and the valley below us. Soon we enter the main path, in dense oak tree forest. Having crossed the old arched bridge our hikes finishes at the wonderful two arched bridge of Milos with a renovated water mill next to. Day 3: Stone bridges of Zagori (Kipi to Vitsa) & the wild mushrooms of Zagori

We start our day with a beautiful hike to the villages of Koukouli, and Vitsa. Directly from our hotel we visit the impressive triple Arche bridge of Plakidas, and then enter a well maintained path, crossing a bridge. After 45mins we enter the beautiful Koukouli village, where we visit the museum of Lazarides, a teacher who devoted his life in collecting and recording the plants of the area. Visiting his house, we will learn a lot about the way of living in those villages long time ago! The walk continues to Vitsa through Misios Bridge and Vitsa steps, a stone path built 300 years ago. We make a nice rest to our hotel and then visit the restaurant of Vasilis.

Discover the secrets of wild mushrooms

Food collected from the wild has always played an important role in the predominantly vegetarian cuisine of Zagori. Local chef, environmentalist and mushroom expert Vassilis Katsoupas hosts a unique storytelling and dining experience focusing on wild mushrooms. Weaving local lore, family stories and science you will be entertained and discover the role of fungi in human evolution, culture, food and medicine from the Paleolithic age to modern times. Best of all, the presentation culminates with a 5 course dinner, from starters to main courses and dessert, featuring wild Zagori mushrooms.

Day 4: Vikos Gorge crossing (approximately hiking time 6 - 7 hours)

Early in the morning we transfer to Monodendri where we start our Vikos gorge crossing.

We will cross Vikos Gorge, a very impressive canyon and one of the deepest in the world! We hike downhill, where we meet the small river that flows through the gorge. We continue next to the stream, and walk right into the heart of the National Park. In the gorge still find refuge a lot of wild animals, such as pray birds, bears and wild boars. Our walk will end at Vikos village after a small ascent, around 40 minutes. We make a rest at Vikos village until our bus will transfer us to Aristi village for our traditional dinner.

Day 5: Rafting Voidomatis River & cooking session at the vegetable garden of “Astra”, Papingo

The process is simple, to the bridge of Aristi where is our starting point we will give you, your neoprene uniforms and equipment. After a small briefing on paddling and safety, we are ready to start. Moving down under plane trees, learning the history of the region and of course stopping for a swim, is a unique experience in the crystal clear and frozen waters of Voidomatis! We will make a stop for a short visit to the monastery of Agion Anargyron and our great surprise at the end under the Klidonia bridge! Duration: 2 hours

After rafting we transfer to Megalo Papigo for a delicious cooking experience. Our session starts by entering the vegetable garden where and depending on the season we will choose the ingredients for our traditional Zagorian dinner. Overnight stay, www.zissishotel.com

Day 6: Departure

This is where our cultural active experience ends, we will transfer to Ioannina town for the continuation of our journey.
