Drakolimni is the name of the alpine lake in mountain Tymfi (2497m.). According to local folktales the lakes used to be inhabited by dragons who fought each other by throwing pines and rocks and thus created the peculiar landscape and gave their names to the lake. Starting from the village of Mikro Papingo, enjoy a great hike in this mountain paradise.

Day 1: Mikro Papingo - Astraka Hunt - Dragon Lake - Astraka Hut

Our hike starts from the village of Mikro Papigo at 950 in the most popular pathway up to the mountain. This path is also a part of the long distance pathway so called 03. The first part is a steep 3,5hrs uphill climb to the cole at 1950m where Astraka’s hut is. There are 4 water springs on the way up so there is no need to carry water all the way from the beginning. We will make a rest in the hut, leave our back packs for the night and set off for Drakolimni, at 1,5hrs distance from the hut at 2100m. Drakolimni is amongst some of the highest peaks of the mountain offering great views to the North face of the mountain. It is really worth to climb to the small peak above the lake in order to enjoy at its best this majestic land all around us. Gamila 1 peak (2497m) and Smolikas peak (2637m) can be seen amongst tenths of other Pindos’ peaks. We return (1hr) back to the hut where we will have our dinner.

Overnight stay in Astraka refuge (L/D)

Duration: 6 hours

Day 2:Astraka Hut - Mikro Papingo

Early in the morning after our breakfast we return from the same way back to Mikro Papigo.

Duration: 2.30 hours
