The region of Epirus boasts some of the most scenic green nature in the country. The Vikos Aoos National Park, in the area known as Zagori, is an ideal location for nature enthusiasts.
The Zagori is one of the most picturesque regions of Greece with many authentic, stone villages and magnificent views of the Pindos mountains. The region is a real paradise for hiking nature enthusiasts. The stunning peaks of Mt.Gamila and Astraka at altitudes above 2,000m, the dragon lakes, invite you for demanding hiking amongst rare and countless varieties of flowers. Vikos Gorge, listed as the deepest gorge in the world by the Guinness Book of Records, renowned for its natural beauty, crystal river pools in an unforgettable experience. The Vikos Gorge, with walls of up to 1 km in height, is also a site of major scientific interest, because it is in almost virgin condition, is a haven for endangered species and contains many and varied ecosystems.

Day1: Arrival in Ioannina & Transfer to Monodendri

Pick up from Ioannina and transfer to Monodendri village, where you will settle to your friendly guesthouse and meet with your guide. Depending on time of arrival, we may visit the monastery of Agia Paraskevi, close to the edge of the gorge.  O/N in a guesthouse or  or similar. (Dinner)

Day 2: Monodendri –  Stone bridges and villages of Zagori (Approximate Hiking time: 6 hours)

Hike from Monodentri to Vitsa. We hike from Vitsa to Koukouli, Kipi, where we tour around the old bridges that connected the villages, years ago.  The walk starts from Vitsa, down hilling the Vitsa Steps, in the heart of Vikos Gorge. We cross one of the famous arched bridges and start up hilling towards Koukouli. The village square calls for a refreshment!! The walk continues to Kipi, where we rest and see some more beautiful bridges, a real work of art! Through densed forest we hike to Dilofo, a village protected as a monument of local architecture. We rest at the square and walk back to Monodentri. O/N in a guesthouse or  or similar. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Day 3: Monodendri – Papingo (Approximate Hiking time: 6-7 hrs) Vikos Gorge Hike

Hike to Mikro Papingo through the Vikos Gorge with its turquoise river-pools (5 to 6 hours).  A classic trek in one of Europe’s finest canyons. Spectacular cliff walls tower up on both sides as we follow the riverbed downstream, or a small path alongside (4 hrs).  We end with a further 2 hours uphill beneath the towers of Papingo. We may cool off with a dip in the natural swimming pool of a nearby stream before settling into our rooms.  O/N  (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Day 4 : Papingo to Mt Gamila Refuge and Dragon Lake (Approximate Hiking time: 5 hrs)

Todays hike starts with 3 hours uphill from Mikro Papingo to the “Astraka” refuge on Mt. Gamila, at 1950m. Here we picnic and leave our packs for the afternoon walk to the first of the Dragon Lakes, an hour away across grassy uplands studded with flowers and (until July) some small snow pack. We return to the refuge for the night. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Day 5 : Astraka & Gamila Peaks (Approximate Hiking time: 6-8 hrs)

This is our peak day, the choice is to hike on one of the beautiful peaks, Astraka 2436m, or Gamila, the highest 2497m. Both options are good and quite demanding, as for the Astraka walk you must hike for about  6 to 8 hours and Gamila is closer with 5 hours. A great walk on alpine meadows and very impressive views of the steep cliffs and peaks! We return to the refuge for the night. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Day 6: Astraka refuge to Tsepelovo (Approximate hiking time: 8 hrs)

A long day is ahead of us today as we have to cross Timfi mountainrange, a long but beautiful walk. We start down hilling from the refuge reaching the big plains of the mountain. Under the impressive cliffs of Astraka we continue direction a small water reservoir Loutsa Robozi. A place for the shepherds to water the animals in summer. The walk brings us at the beginning of Megas Lakos an impressive canyon which ends at Vikos. As we cross a water spring we continue to the lands of Tsepelovo our final destination. O/N in guesthouse  (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
