About Greek Easter…

Greece plays host to religious festivals with deeply rooted customs and centuries-old traditions all year round. One of the greatest celebrations of Christianity is Easter. The faithful Christians all over Greece follow the Holy Week ritual devoutly, giving themselves body and soul into the culmination of the Passion of Christ and finally rejoicing in His Resurrection. This is a 7 - day cultural trip based in the medieval city of Rhodes, combining action touring and participation in the Easter costumes.

Day 1- Holy Thursday 13/04/17: Arrival in Rhodes & Traditional Easter Cooking class

Arrival to Diagoras Airport and short transfer to the hotel (located in Rhodes Town).

After meeting your Trekking Hellas Guide, it's time to merge into Greece's traditions by participating in an unforgettable cooking class (that will take place at the hotel). Every guest will have the opportunity to learn how and prepare for himself traditional for this day - and for the whole Easter Period sweat breads - called tsourekia, and also to dye eggs with red special dyes for the unique Greek custom of cracking eggs during Easter Festivities.

At the late afternoon, we will walk through the picturesque alleys of the Medieval City and feel the charm of this UNESCO heritage Monumental City.

Day 2- Holy Friday 14/04/17: Hike to Kritinia and Participation in the Epitaph procession

After a filling breakfast, we drive towards the Castle of Kritinia, just an hour from the northern point of the island – Rhodes Town. On the way , we pass by different seaside villages all along the west side of the island. After approximately an hour we visit the Castle of Kritinia , which is extremely well preserved and dates back to the Mediaval Ages. We then hike up to the village of Kritinia, walking through fertile fields full of colorful vegetables. At Kritinia, a village that was founded by the Cretans, food is “sacred” and heartmade – our lunch will be served on the main square of the village, which overlooks the Aegean, and will be delicious. The descent will lead us through a different trail, towards a gorge full of Mediterreanean herbs and ends up by the sea, just in the front of 12th century Byzantine church. After a short break , we finish our hike at Kritinia’s Castle, and we drive back to our hotel . Late in the afternoon, optionally, we attend the holy Epitaph, which is one of the most attended religious ceremonies of Easter Period in Greece. The event takes place at almost every church and every local community in the Christian Orthodox world, but at the narrow alleys of the Medieval town of Rhodes, the feeling will be surely overwhelming.

Day 3- Holy Saturday 15/04/17: Hike to Attavyros Peak, resurrection celebrations - Traditional dinner

Today is the most challenging of our hiking days on the island. We will drive to Ag.Isidoros, a pretty small mountainous village, located on the foot of the mountain Attavyros – the highest peak of the Dodecanese islands with an altitude of 1.216m. The mountain itself is clarified as a protected area by Natura 2000, and has some flora species that can be only found in this area. Also, a cypress tree forest recognized  as a monument of Nature. The climb up is almost entirely alpine with the trail going up gradually. On the top, one can see the remainings of a temple dedicated to Zeus and also can admire the wonderful views to the nearby islands. After finishing our descend, we will enjoy the traditional locally made dishes at a small tavern and afterwards we will head back to our hotel in orded to be prepared for the evening’s festivals. Optionally at around 23.00 we will visit the church Ag. Fanourios, located in the Medieval town of Rhodes, to attend the service for Resurrection of Jesus. After midnight everything seems magical – colorful candles will sparkle all around and fireworks will enlighten the evening sky. Dinner will be served late, and will include traditionally made soup and plates for this specific day.

Day 4- Easter Sunday 16/04/17: Sea Kayaking & and traditional easter lunch

If the weather is favorable, this day will be a sea kayaking one. In double kayaks we will start paddling from Vlycha, a seaside village to the east side of Rhodes – close to famous Lindos. After a few miles, some wonderfull sea caves and amazing views we will reach Lindos. The archaeological site of Lindian Athina is totally worth visiting and the town itself of course with whitewashed cubic houses and narrow alleys. After enjoying a lunch by the sea, and some tradiotional for the day roasted lamb, we will have the chance to admire some locally organized traditional dances and festivities due to Easter Sunday celebrations.

If the sea condition is not appropriate the sea kayaking activity will be replaced by an easy coastal hike from Vlycha to Lindos – probably the most beautiful small town of the Dodecanese Islands – admired by hundreds of famous artists of the world that fall in love with her and decided to move in! At the late afternoon we will be back in Rhodes Town and after some free time – we will dine in town.

Day 5- Easter Monday 17/04/17: Day excursion to Symi

After breakfast, time to catch the ferry and explore Symi, an island just an hour away from Rhodes, so different, yet so magical. Symi is cosmopolitan, has well preserved mansions, colorful doorways and rich flora. On our way to Symi we will have the chance to glance Turkey, which is so close, and after docking to to the port we will head towards Chorio, the former capital of the island with its beautiful old houses and its proud standing castle. The end of the hike is the beach and chapel called Agios Nikolaos where the calmness is priceless. Lunch will be back at Symi Town and in the early afternoon, by the same boat we will access the southest point of the island, called Panormitis, due to the so-called famous monastery of the Area. After a visit, we return to Rhodes Town. Free time and Dinner.

Day 6- Tuesday 18/04/2017: Bike Orange Valley

After a short transfer to Massari, a traditional village, we will bike through the unforgettable Orange Valley, we will conquer the Castle of Faraklos and we will be refreshed at the seaside small and pretty village of Charaki. After doing so coastal biking the route will lead us back to the start of our journey. The level of difficulty is 2 out of 5, and suits almost every rider with some previous experience.
